As a fourth-generation resident of Selma, AL living in Atlanta, I return home often to commune with a region caught between deep-rooted traditions and an unsure future. Exploring a landscape where past and present converge, I chronicle the Black Belt region of Alabama surrounding Selma with the perspective of both insider and outsider.
I document places where the economy is stagnant. Where unfilled promises due to an education system strained by limited resources hobble the workforce, making it hard to attract new business to the area.
It’s a love/hate relationship. The dichotomy of devotion to a faith-based life in the South whose actions betray a different viewpoint. The contradiction between what we say we believe and how we move through the world. This is my love letter to the area I call home, with all its inconsistencies and complexities. I search for the point where belonging and disconnection coexist, where I yearn for a past that was comfortable, but only for a privileged few, while working to find a new way forward.
