Facing a struggling economy, a rising climate crisis and quickly diminishing reproductive rights, women in the US are facing the greatest challenge to autonomy in decades. The women I photographed combat these restraints. They’ve found the freedom to fly, using what they have: skateboards.
I moved to New York City after years away, and discovered a thriving all-female and non-binary skate culture. On their own time, they volunteered to be photographed. These young women are facing down the inequities in the world with resilience, openness and adventure. Their strength gives me hope.
Over the course of the next six months, I plan to interview the women I photographed so I can highlight their stories as well. If I am selected for Critical Mass, I hope to hear suggestions from the jurors on ways to present this body of work in an expanded format.
