Jo Ann Chaus

"Conversations Continued" is an organic response to the direct and confrontational self portraits of my previous body of work, "Conversations with Myself". Here, as a maker in my 6th decade, the work is a meditative reflection, considering existential questions about time and identity as a woman, wife, mother, grandmother and artist, asking “who am I", "where am I from", "how did I get here", "where am going”.

The thread that continues to run through the work is an examination of the human condition, with myself as the stand in for “any woman” or “any individual”. As the protagonist I perform as assorted characters, and explore the theme of identity, using deliberate choices of costumes, color, light, place and gesture.

Considering each or our individual inheritances, instincts, lineage, and traits, my explorations are a search to unearth the possibilities and potentials I hold, as I search to understand my inner world in relation to the world at large. I continue to nod to the past embedded within, a recognition of it and an attempt to disengage from same, to declare my individual point of view.

With a a strong interest in the psychological and a background in fashion I use my conscious and subconscious instincts to create images that suggest the states of mind of the women I performs as, who embody moments of deep innerness, indecision and meditation. Regardless of how one identifies, the images speak to the tenuous struggles and conflicts we each navigate daily as adults, in relation to ourselves and others.

The work mirrors my personal transformation, finding light to bask in, “as I am”.
