TEENAGE PREGNANCY. A long term project focusing on teenagers facing motherhood Teenage pregnancy is widespread in the Philippines, especially among the poor. In Manila, this contributes to rapid population growth and helps to perpetuate poverty in the city’s crowded slums. Tondo's ghettoes, teetering on the banks of the polluted Pasig river, houses a tenth of the capital's population. They live in dark hovels made of scavenged corrugated iron, old rags, rotting wood and plastic sheeting Children are everywhere, tangible evidence of the city's teenage pregnancy problem. Every year, 13 out of 100 girls aged between 15 and 19, amongst the poorest fifth of the Filipino population get pregnant. Within the richest fifth, the figure is just 1.2. Healthcare for Manila's urban poor is almost non-existent, while opportunities to learn about contraception in this strictly Catholic country are rare. Personal Statement Photography lies at the heart of everything I do. I began shooting when I was 17 and immediately was lured towards human interest stories, the subtleties that make us human and the impact we have on each other in a small community, or on a global scale, documenting the everyday life of marginalized communites facing humanitarian crisis. I believe that wherever you go, there is an important story to be told. I tend to err on the side of stories that have been left alone by the international spotlight, the aftermath of war, corruption or natural disasters.
