Mark Fernandes

Deconstruction I Deconstruction I focuses on the process of demolition of various stadiums in the NY area over the past two years. My work generally deals with memory through a conceptual photographic process. I aim for images that reflect my memory of a place or event, rather than a mere single shot. Drawn from my interest in non-linear perception, my artistic approach is based on the deconstruction/reconstruction of space. Composed of different moments in time, I compress my archived photographic information into a single image. The demolishion of historical stadiums is the focus of the project DECONSTRUCTION I. What the viewer sees is an extended, dreamlike depiction of each stadium being dismantled. Archived photographic information of each iconic site, ranging from days to months, is compressed into a single image, capturing various stages of the deconstruction that actually took place. The work aims for an expanded version of reality by using the camera. What the viewer sees is not really what the camera captured, but rather mirrors my inner image of what i experienced over a period of time (MEMORY). Mark William Fernandes recently completed my MFA at Parsons the New School for Design and currently lives and works in Munich. Recent exhibitions include a two person show in NY (PS122, June 2010). Recent prizes and awards includes the 1st prize of the New York Photo Awards (2009) as well as the 1st prize in the PDN Photo Annual (2010).
